A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
