Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
